MIG, or metal inert gas welding is a process which uses a consumable wire electrode covered with a flux to produce welds in a wide range of materials.

A shielding gas usually argon is introduced to protect the weld puddle from air contamination which could cause oxidation or side reactions which may have deleterious effects on the weld or on the properties of the weld metal.

The advantages of the process are fine bead appearance, high deposition rates, good fusion and good control of contamination.
